Technology can revolutionize medical centres and can change the way they operate. In fact, the use of medical technology has allowed patients to interact with physicians and caregivers on an entirely new level.

One healthcare institute that has taken technology to the next level is the Geisinger Medical Center near Danville, which has invested $100 million in a new project called the Hospital for Advanced Medicine.

The new building occupies nine stories has two top floors that contain 60 rooms and offer views across the mountains for the people admitted for heart and blood vessel problems. But this isn't the only advancement the center can boast.

State-of-the-art

Patient rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art ceiling cameras, microphones, and big-screen televisions - all of which, while sounding like something off the set of Big Brother, actually play a significant role in patient care.

The ceiling cameras allow critical-care doctors and nurses to closely monitor a patient's condition, ensuring high-quality, around-the-clock care. The high-tech ceiling-mounted cameras have the ability to zoom in on a patient with such clarity that physicians can actually detect color changes in a patient's eye.

Meanwhile, the big-screen televisions have dual purpose as entertainment and a virtual liaison between physicians and patients, enabling both parties to interact and discuss medical information, Examiner.com reports.

"The Hospital for Advanced Medicine represents a considerable investment by Geisinger in the health and well-being of our community, and demonstrates Geisinger's ongoing commitment to ensure our patients have access to the specialists, sub-specialists, facilities and technology necessary for the most advanced medical care possible." said Glenn Steele Jr., MD, PhD, president and CEO of Geisinger Health System, to Newswise.

Geisinger's recent investment has enhanced its model of patient care and serves as a benchmark for healthcare systems nationwide. It has gone from an established acute-care center to a state-of-the-art healthcare system that utilizes the endless possibilities of cutting-edge technology.

The Geisinger Medical Center will welcome its first patients on 9 February.
